A 13-year-old boy and man (19) from IJmuiden were arrested by the police on Friday evening because they allegedly bombarded boas with fireworks. One of the boas was injured in the process. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee had to intervene to restore peace. A 37-year-old man was subsequently arrested for not cooperating with the police.
It was a restless evening in the area of the Lange Nieuwstraat. Around 7:30 p.m., several groups of people gathered who committed destruction and set off heavy fireworks, the police reported.
When a number of boas approached the unrest, things went wrong. They were pelted with fireworks. The police and Royal Netherlands Marechaussee arrested a 19-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy for possession of illegal fireworks.
Surrounding area cordoned off
The police also found several nitrates in the area, which may have been lit, but had not gone off. The area was then cordoned off for safe removal.
But it was noisy on the street: groups of people hung around in the neighborhood and threw fireworks in the direction of the emergency workers a number of times, the police say. He therefore decided to drive the groups apart together with the Marechaussee.
Then peace returned to the streets. The 37-year-old man was arrested for not cooperating with the police.
One of the enforcers was injured by the heavy fireworks. Later he became unwell. He was treated at the scene by paramedics. All arrested persons have since been released, but the 37-year-old man and the 13-year-old boy remain suspects.
