Teenage girls in Barcelona are more hooked on their cell phones than boys: 4 hours a day

The girls are more hooked on mobile that the boys in Barcelona city. Specifically, they dedicate each day 4.04 hours and their generation companions 3.33 h, as revealed this Tuesday in the annual Health Report of Barcelona City Council.

The data is from 2021, the latest available in this field, so it would be expected that the average is currently higher given the rise of the telephone device among younger people. The wave of schools that join in banning it would not impact this statistic, which already only counts consumption outside of school hours.

On weekends consumption skyrockets even more: five and a half hours for them and almost five hours for them. 77% assure that they have no parental limitation on the use of their smartphone.

Seven hours of screen time a day

The report goes beyond phones and analyzes the most common screens among teenagers. The sum of mobile phones, computers, consoles and television amounts to more than 7 non-school hours per day per adolescent. The report also points out that screen consumption is higher among students from poor neighborhoods.
