Technology as a key tool for the prevention of traffic accidents

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO)approximately 1.3 million people die around the world as a result of traffic accidents each year, while in our country, for its part, more than 10 people died per day during 2021 in accidents of these characteristics.

With the aim of fighting to reduce these numbers, more and more cities are acquiring intelligent solutions for traffic management that help guarantee road safety. In fact, The WHO has suggested as an effective solution to address traffic problems, design safer infrastructure and incorporate technology in transportation planning.

In this line, the video surveillance cameras have evolved and become a much more complete tool. Today they not only allow to see the events once they have occurred but are also used for prevention.

So much so, that the cameras that we currently see on the street are not only there to detect those who cross the red light, but the number of issues they can detect are increasing: sudden lane changes, disobeying traffic signals, parking in bike lanes, using the phone while driving, unfastened seat belt, or occupying emergency lanesamong others.

This intelligent traffic monitoring also allows detection of large trucks that are prohibited on the monitored area (“red zone”) according to the weight and dimension as well as the specific time period.

And of course, speeding: the most predominant cause of accidents. As indicated by a study conducted by the WHO, in high-income countries, speeding causes approximately 30% of traffic-related deathswhile it represents approximately 50% of victims in middle-income countries.

Cameras equipped with automatic patent recognition (ANPR) technology they capture both the license plate number and the time from the beginning to the end of the detection zone. The information is then transferred to the DMSS platform to assess the average speed of each passing vehicle. The recommended distance is 2 to 5 km, which gives an accuracy rate of 99.8%. The margin of error decreases as the length of the detection zone increases.

In this way, more and more, well-applied technology becomes key to what is most important in traffic accidents: prevention.
