Tears, anger and despair: this is the best way to describe what the father, mother and girlfriend are going through today. For the first time they are a few meters away from the Hilversum youths who are suspected of the death of their son. Tears for the loss and anger and despair because the real perpetrator does not want to get up. “What did Carlo do to you that evening?” Carlo’s mother addressed the suspects sternly.
In front of a full court, but especially in front of the nine suspects of the violence in Mallorca last year, Carlo’s father, mother and girlfriend went through what they experienced and how the loss of their loved one up to the continues today.

Carlo’s friend Lisa told us what her life has been like since the loss of Carlo. “My reality is eating alone, shopping alone, coming home alone, going to bed alone: all alone, without my love,” she argued. “I’m often asked: How are you? I still don’t know where to start. Sad, lost, angry, distraught, empty. But usually the words that come out are not the words I’m reciting, but rather: yes, no, I’m fine.”
She also tells how it was last summer. On vacation alone for the first time. “The day before I went to Carlo’s grave, as if I wanted to ask him to come with me. My reality is that towards sunset I sit crying at Carlo’s grave, distraught, alone and hoping for a miracle.”

Mother Carlo Heuvelman: “I knew right away that it was wrong”
Carlo’s mother told how her son stopped by just before his vacation to say hello. “He gave us a big hug before he left and said he loved us. With the promise that he would come back when he came back, I greeted him happily. Not knowing my husband would get me out of bed two days later. be picked up and told that something bad happened to Carlo and that he was in intensive care in Mallorca.”
Mother Heuvelman also spoke about the distraught days that followed. “I knew right away that it was very wrong. The days after were a nightmare. I would have loved to lie in a fetal position on the floor and scream loudly. I had no hope, because I knew I would lose him. My beautiful , sweet affectionate boy, whom I have protected and for whom I would give my life.”

Main suspect Sanil B. responds extensively
Only Sanil B. – labeled by the judiciary as one of the main suspects in Carlo’s death – addressed the relatives extensively. “I’ve been thinking for a long time about responding because I can’t imagine how hard it must be for you to hear this from me,” he began. “I think it’s horrible what happened to you, to your lives and to Carlo. I can’t express how much compassion I have. I wish I could give the answers you crave so much.”
“All I can say now is that the way it is now is not correct. These are not the answers you should get. I sincerely hope that the real perpetrator comes into conscience and that you get those answers.”
