Saturday afternoon at Borussia Dortmund was all about farewells. In addition to sports director Michael Zorc and goalscorer Erling Haaland, Marcel Schmelzer also ended his BVB career. However, the fan favorite could wear the black and yellow jersey again.
Marcel Schmelzer played for Borussia Dortmund for a total of 17 years. The left-back worked his way up from the youth teams to BVB captain and celebrated two championships and three triumphs in the DFB Cup.
In recent seasons, however, the 34-year-old has repeatedly struggled with stubborn injuries. As a result, Schmelzer was not on the pitch in the season finale against Hertha BSC (2-1). Nevertheless, the ex-national player was duly celebrated by BVB fans.
“I’ve received a lot of cool news in the last few days, which made me very happy and also very touching,” Schmelzer was quoted as saying by the “Ruhr Nachrichten” and enthused: “And then the moment at half-time with the choreo, with the shirt.” This “put the cherry on top of the whole thing”.
Schmelzer will probably get a BVB farewell game
Last year another club legend was said goodbye in Lukasz Piszczeck. However, due to the Corona measures, the Pole had to do without a large audience.
“I hope we can catch up on that,” said Schmelzer when asked about Piszczeck and added: “I think something is planned that the guys from the doubles team will meet again.” So it seems to be a farewell game.
Meanwhile, Schmelzer leaves his future open: “It was my plan for a long time that I wanted to get out of Germany and, if possible, out of Europe too. But in the last few months I’ve decided to let that be and stop completely”. He could “imagine several things”.
