Antoinette de Jong
She is over the blow that Antoinette de Jong received on Saturday. After her disappointing eighth place in the 3000 meters, the Jumbo-Visma driver will take action again on Monday in the 1500 meters, the part in which she wants to go for nothing less than Olympic gold. “She had a hard time after her race, but on Sunday she trained well and showed a lot of beautiful things,” reports her coach Jac Orie in the catacombs of the National Speed Skating Oval. “She did that before, but you’re always a little scared, because after such a nasty ride it has to be pulled out of the pit. It seems to be looking good.”
Ireen Wusto
It promises to be a wonderful battle on the skating mile, because besides De Jong there are a lot of other candidates for gold. The most appealing candidate is Ireen Wüst, who wants to go for her sixth Olympic title in her favorite event and sees that as a real mission. “At times when it really has to be, I can often give something extra,” assures Wüst, who says he feels good.
On the eve of her first race at these Winter Games in Beijing, her teammate and two-time Olympic champion Kjeld Nuis left a stimulating message for her on Instagram. ‘Great! Tomorrow your fifth Olympics. So much respect for you. Go get it.’ Wüst responded with the words: ‘Dear, thank you!! I go for it!’

Miho Takagi
Based on recent results, Japan’s Miho Takagi, a pupil of Dutch national team coach Johan de Wit, is one of the biggest title favorites. But also Brittany Bowe (US), Ragne Wiklund (Norway), Ayano Sato (Japan), Elizaveta Golubeva (Russia) and Ivanie Blondin (Canada) are names to keep an eye on.
Marijke Groenewoud will also appear at the start on behalf of the Netherlands. She will compete in stage nine against the Chinese Qi Yin. De Jong is the eleventh to go to battle. Kazakh Nadezhda Morozova is her opponent. In stage twelve of fifteen, Wüst fights a duel with Blondin. The starting gun sounds at half past nine Dutch time.
Sjinkie Knegt and Suzanne Schulting will both be back in action on Monday.

Sjinkie Knegt seems ready for a medal after the overture of these Games. In the 1000 meters he apparently glided smoothly to Monday’s quarterfinals, although he took it a little too easily in the last meters of his race. In his heat, the 32-year-old Frisian made an unnecessary attempt to pass the Korean Olympic champion Daeheon Whang, leaving Knegt only narrowly in second, because he was almost surprised by the Chinese Wenlong Li.
“Why?” national coach Jeroen Otter wondered aloud. “It is clear that Sjinkie feels good and is comfortable in his own skin, but this was not necessary.” However, Knegt’s extension leg did its job again, so that he still finished second. “Maybe I shouldn’t have done that, but luckily I was able to parry that Chinese. I knew it was going to be fast and I would be through in time. It’s going well, I get confidence from that,” said Knegt.
Itzhak de Laat is also there on the kilometer, where Jens van ‘t Wout just missed the boat. His heat also went fast, but because many hindered riders in other series – including De Laat – were promoted to the quarterfinals, Van ‘t Wout’s potential place was forfeited. For the women it was in the heats of the 500 meters full house, with Suzanne Schulting, Xandra Velzeboer and Selma Poutsma who qualified for the quarterfinals. The first two set the fastest times.
Adriana Jelinkova
Adriana Jelinkova will compete in the giant slalom at 02:30. It is the first time since 1952 that the Netherlands is participating in alpine skiing at the Games.
