The only African team in the UCI WorldTour will no longer belong to the first division of cycling in 2022 for financial reasons.
As the team Qhubeka NextHash, based in Johannesburg, South Africa announced, it was not possible to secure the long-term future of the team. It was therefore decided to cease operations in the UCI WorldTour on December 31, the team said.
Qhubeka was the first African team to take part in the Tour de France in 2015. There, the racing team moved into focus thanks to Daniel Teklehaimanot from Eritrea, who wore the dotted jersey of the best climber for four days. The team has been racing in the WorldTour with a UCI license since 2016.
In the coming year, the Qhubeka team wants to continue racing as a UCI Continental team based in Italy. The only German driver in the ranks of the team, Max Walscheid (28), will switch to the French Cofidis team for the new season.
