Team | Günter still dreams of playing in tournaments

After two tournaments without playing, national soccer player Christian Günter has not yet given up hope of participating in the World Cup or the European Championship with his own game.

“I would like to continue to be part of the national team,” said the SC Freiburg captain to the “kicker”: “I’ll step on the gas so that I can maybe experience another tournament like this, in which the team will hopefully be more successful.”

Günter was part of the German squad at the 2021 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup, but was not used for a minute. So far, the full-back has completed seven international matches.

The World Cup in Qatar was “an extraordinary experience even without playing minutes,” said Günter: “In the club, I often stand on the pitch and don’t say to my colleagues on the bench or in the stands: you don’t belong. Everyone belongs to that. I see the big picture.”

It is still unclear what role the 29-year-old will play in the DFB team in the future. “Hansi Flick has already announced that there may be one or the other change. I’m curious to see what my role will look like. In March, there will be a little indication of where the journey will go,” he says, looking at the International match opener against Peru and Belgium.
