Team Drenthe College drives 3000 kilometers through the Moroccan desert

Five students and three teachers from the TT Institute of Drenthe College in Assen are taking part in the Morocco Desert Challenge. During the prestigious rally they drive across the desert from Agadir to Mergouza in eight days. This morning they set off for their adventure in North Africa.

A robust bright red bolide is firmly secured with tension straps on the trailer. “This is it, The Monster.” Emma Peeters looks at the car in which she will spend days. While lecturer Chris Lanting is behind the wheel, Peeters maps out the right route as a navigator. “It is the first time that I am traveling beyond France. And then I can also navigate in a rally car. That is of course very cool.”

For the next few days she will sit next to her other team members in the converted fire truck that pulls the trailer. On board, in addition to sufficient supplies, they mainly carry many spare parts and tools. Bins full of keys, hoses, air tubes, and nuts are neatly sorted behind the roller shutters on the sides of the car. “We are mainly busy at night,” says mechanic Martin Schinkel. “Because the car comes in at night and then needs to be refurbished.”
