The Brose Bamberg team again missed out on getting into the Champions League shortly before the start of the Bundesliga. Now the players in the league want to ensure a sense of achievement – and take out their anger on the defending champion Alba Berlin.
And the marmot says hello every day. The Bamberg basketball players should feel like they did in the Hollywood film with Bill Murray: A year ago, just before the season started, they failed to qualify for the Champions League, the third highest basketball competition in Europe.
Everything should be better this season. The Upper Franconians did a short training camp in Portugal especially before the qualifying tournament, then won their first game just after extra time, but the second and decisive game was lost last Sunday. It put a clear bankruptcy at Benfica and Lisbon Bamberg missed out on entering the Champions League.
Heckmann: “Hopefully we’ll take our anger out on Alba”
Winger Patrick Heckmann still couldn’t quite digest it a few days later: “It’s still very bitter, of course we were hoping for more.” After the defeat in Lisbon, Bamberg only competes in the fourth-rate FIBA Europe Cup, the lowest competition in Europe.
Then have to stop sense of achievement in the Bundesliga. But it won’t be easier at the start, because it’s against Bonn, Crailsheim and on the first matchday on Sunday (October 2nd, 2022, 3 p.m.) against champion Alba Berlin. “Hopefully we can take our anger out on them, that would be nice,” says Heckmann.
Sengfelder and Heckmann are to lead the newly formed team
He belongs to the extended circle of the national team. He wasn’t there at the European Championship. The 30-year-old should once again play an important role at the club this season in a Bamberg team that is almost completely new.
Heckmann, however – with a short break in Ulm – is entering his sixth season as a Bamberger and knows his role: “I’m trying to set an example for the boys. I’ve been at the club the longest with Chris and I know how things are going here.” Chris, this is Chris Sengfelder, the captain. This team is built around him.
Sengfelder returns to Bamberg with a bronze medal at the European Championships
Only Sengfelder missed the Bamberg preparation because he was at the European Championships and won bronze with Germany. And the Czech national player Jaromir Bohacik was at the European Championship and still has to integrate. The same applies to the new shooting guard Justin Wright-Foreman, who is strong in Lisbon.
You will only see in a few weeks what Bamberg is really capable of. Patrick Heckmann already says what the fans can look forward to: “On commitment, will, fighting spirit, team play. We are a lot of different characters who can play well together and put our hearts and blood into it.” So that Heckmann and Bamberg look better than they did last time in the Champions League qualification. After all, they want to play for the championship play-offs in the Bundesliga.
