TBS ordered against Amstelvener (37) for fatal ‘frolic’ with 71-year-old father

Today, a TBS with compulsory treatment was demanded against the 37-year-old Amstelveen resident who early this year so severely abused his 71-year-old father that he died a few weeks later. According to experts, the man cannot be blamed for the violence because he suffers from bipolar disorder.

The Public Prosecution Service writes this in an explanation of the demand formulated today. According to a psychologist and psychiatrist, the man also has an alcohol problem and was in a manic state at the time of the assault.

When the police were alerted to a disturbance in a home in Amstelveen on January 8, they found a seriously injured man. His son was also present in the home. Because he appeared confused and traces of a fight were found in the house, officers arrested him.

Interrogation yields little

Due to his confused state, his interrogation yields little. During several interrogations he emphasizes that he remembers little of the events, except that he played with his father.

The Public Prosecution Service finds it difficult to interpret that statement. “Although it is possible that he cannot actually reproduce what happened, the possibility that he consciously chooses to remain vague must also be taken into account,” the prosecutor said.

What is certain in any case is that the father and his son were the only people in the home at the time of the violence, and they had no (unwanted) visitors the evening or night before.

Previous manic moods

If the man drinks alcohol during manic episodes, he can act uninhibited, the experts conclude. He also had such periods before the violence that caused his father’s death. The man died at the end of January, 18 days after he was found seriously injured.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, it has been established that the man murdered his father. Yet – despite the doubts about the sincerity of his statement – she asks the court not to prosecute him because of his disorders. Because it is feared that the man will cross the line again, a TBS with compulsory treatment is demanded. The verdict will be announced in two weeks.
