Taylor Swift threatens student with lawsuit over flight data tracking

Jack Sweeney has been researching celebrity flight data for years. For Swift, a threat to privacy.

Taylor Swift travels a lot and flies from one appointment to the next. Although some data from her private jet trips are publicly available, the singer wants to avoid all of her trips becoming public and becoming the basis for discussion. The American Jack Sweeney is a thorn in her side. The student has been researching and publishing the air travel data of celebrities for several years on social media. Swift’s lawyers now want to stop this and are threatening him with a lawsuit.

“It’s about life and death”

According to the “Washington Post” A letter from the law firm arrived at Sweeney’s home in Florida in December 2023. In this, the lawyers asked him to no longer make any data from Taylor Swift’s private jet public. If he fails to do so, they would have “no choice but to pursue all legal remedies.” Attorney Katie Wright Morrone cites, among other things, the reason for the request that his posts caused the musician “direct and irreparable harm as well as emotional and physical pain” – she fears for her personal safety.

The letter to the 21-year-old, which Morrone provided to the newspaper, continued: “While for you this may be a game or a path to wealth or fame, for our client it is a matter of life and death .” She added that there is “no legitimate interest in or public need for this information other than to stalk, harass and exert domination and control.”

“Your team believes they can control the world”

The “Cruel Summer” singer was only confronted with a stalker who visited her home in New York in January 2024. He is now charged with harassment and stalking. Morrone sees a connection between the tracking of her flight data and the incident, explaining: “We cannot comment on ongoing police investigations, but we can confirm that the stalkers’ timing suggests a connection. His posts revealed exactly when and where she would be.”

Jack Sweeney sees no wrongdoing in his handling of the data. He told The Washington Post that it was already public knowledge and Swift’s legal team wanted to stop him from spreading it further. “This information is already circulating. Your team believes they can control the world,” Sweeney said.

Currently no posts about Swift

After the lawsuit went out, some social media outlets suspended Sweeney’s accounts, saying he was violating data protection regulations. The student is now sharing posts about other celebrities’ flights again, at least on Instagram, Threads and Facebook, under the name “Celeb Jets”. His Instagram page “TaylorSwiftJets”, which was newly founded in December 2023, has already been deactivated again. His private account currently no longer exists.
