She explains via Instagram why Swift is releasing the two new versions of “Cruel Summer” at this time. She says that it was the fan reactions to the song on her tour that inspired her to pay even more attention to the piece and to make it accessible in a new guise and not just within the concert film.

“What a truly stunning thing you guys did with the Eras tour concert film. […] One of my favorite things you guys did was when you supported Cruel Summer so much that I ended up wanting to start The Eras Tour show with it. For old times’ sake, I’m releasing the live recording of the tour so we can all belt it out in the comfort of our own homes or in the car PLUS a brand new remix from @lpgiobbi.”

“Cruel Summer” has experienced a new revival in 2023 and has not only re-entered the US Billboard Hot 100, but has remained in the upper echelons of the US charts throughout the summer. There the single remained at the top until the release of Drake’s FOR ALL THE DOGS. The single was again able to reach numerous listeners on the streaming platforms, which catapulted the track into the Spotify US Top 100. However, this could also be because the song was featured prominently on the “Eras Tour”. “Cruel Summer” was the show opener there, after a shortened version of “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince”.
