The rock world is still in shock: On Friday, March 25, 2022, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins died unexpectedly at the age of 50. He was found dead in a hotel room in Bogotá, Colombia. In the evening his band was supposed to perform at a festival there, they were on tour through South America.

The cause of death was and is still partly unclear. Hawkins reportedly complained of chest pains. When rescue workers arrived, they could no longer help him and declared his death. Speculations about a heart attack were therefore in the room. Now his legal deputies, together with the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, have published the first results of the toxicological investigations.

Accordingly, traces of various narcotics and drugs were found in Hawkins’ body at the time of death. These include marijuana, opioids, antidepressants and benzodiazepines, i.e. tranquilizers. Whether and to what extent they led to Hawkins’ death is under further investigation. Further results will be communicated in a timely manner.

It is well known that Hawkins was a drug addict in the past. In 2001, he was in a coma for two weeks after a heroin overdose.

The Foo Fighters shared the news of his death via Twitter. They wrote: “The Foo Fighters Family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”

The Foo Fighters released their tenth album MEDICINE AT MIDNIGHT in January 2021. Most recently, they shot the horror film Studio 666, in which Hawkins also starred. Read our obituary for Hawkins, the “grinning gears” of the world’s biggest alternative rock band.
