Tennis professional Tatjana Maria celebrated her second tournament victory on the WTA tour after four years of waiting.
The 34-year-old defeated the Brazilian qualifier Laura Pigossi 6:3, 4:6, 6:2 in the final of the clay court competition in Bogota/Colombia on Sunday. She makes a big jump in the world rankings.
Maria had previously only triumphed in 2018 at the lawn tournament in Mallorca. Due to her strong performance in Colombia (total prize money 239,477 dollars), she will be among the top 120 players in the world again from Monday. After 2:29 hours, she converted her second match point on Sunday. According to the WTA report, Maria is the first player to have won a tournament as a mother of two since the turn of the millennium.
In the semifinals on Saturday, Maria defeated the Russian Kamilla Rachimova 6-2, 6-2. She was spared the duel with the highly rated defending champion: local hero Camila Osorio, seeded in first place, surprisingly failed 5:7, 6:7 (2:7) at Pigossi immediately before Maria’s match.
