Tesla celebrates 50,000 charging stations worldwide. However, the company is still a long way from its actual goal.
• Charging stations: Tesla breaks the 50,000 mark
• Original goal clearly missed
• Tesla’s charging system could become an industry standard
50,000 Superchargers worldwide
Tesla’s Supercharger stations have been around since 2012. Over the past eleven years, the number of the US company’s charging stations has grown from six to 50,000 worldwide. That announced the of Elon Musk led companies in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).

As Teslamag reports, it only took five months after exceeding the 45,000 mark in April for a further 5,000 charging stations to follow. What initially sounds spectacular, however, represents a slowdown compared to the previous expansion pace.
Far from destination
The plan was to expand to a total of almost 90,000 superchargers by this year. In the telephone conference on the numbers for the third quarter of 2021, SVP of Technology Drew Baglino explained that the Supercharger network had doubled in the past 18 months. At this point, there were said to be 3,524 stations and 29,281 columns worldwide – and a further strong acceleration of the expansion was planned. According to the goals that Tesla has set itself, the number of Tesla charging stations should triple within the next two years. The two years announced back then have now almost passed and Tesla is still a long way from reaching its expansion goal. Because a tripling would have meant almost 88,000 instead of the current 50,000 supercharger columns. However, it is unlikely that the remaining three weeks of the third quarter of 2023 will be enough to bridge this gap.
Since exceeding the 45,000 mark of Supercharger stations in April, an average of 1,000 new Tesla stations have been added per month. This is even slightly less than the previous increase from 40,000 to 45,000 Superchargers, which lasted from November 22, 2022 to April 9, 2023, just over four and a half months. At a steady rate of 1,000 new Superchargers per month, it would take another three years to reach the tripling goal set by Baglino in 2021.
Supercharger can also be used for third-party electric cars
The slower expansion of the Supercharger network is even more surprising when you consider that Tesla is now opening its pillars to electric cars from other manufacturers. Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging system could become the industry standard in the United States. Ford, General Motors, Rivian and Volvo have already reached agreements with Tesla to take over Tesla’s charging system from 2024. Stellantis, Hyundai and VW are also said to be considering such an agreement. However, this development had already started in Europe, where third-party brands can now be charged on 70 percent of the Tesla network, according to Teslamag. In German-speaking countries the proportion is said to be as high as 95 percent.
