Tapio Suominen in the psychiatric ward

The reporter-presenter’s illness is treated with electricity.

Openly talked about his bipolar disorder in public Tapio Suominen tells the latest situation update about his illness on Twitter.

Suominen wrote on Sunday that “my mind sank”. He says that he is in Hämeenlinna at Kanta-Häme Central Hospital in the psychiatric ward.

– Bipo is a boring travel companion. I get electricity 3 times a week, I believe it will work again. I also believe that I will back this up, this time too… Suominen wrote.

The message of encouragement was sent by, among others, a well-known hockey commentator Jani Alkio.

– Cheers and strength for recovery, Tapsa.

The word bipo used by Suominen refers to bipolar disorder, which Health Library according to is the term previously used for bipolar disorder.

Suominen, who became known as a sports reporter, was diagnosed with an illness in 2012.

Told about the treatment

Suominen talked about electrotherapy in an interview with Iltalehti in 2018.

At the time, Suominen said that he had not even received a precise answer from the doctors about what the treatment does exactly.

– I myself have thought that if the human mind is a card game Crazy families, then electricity sort of shuffles the deck again. And if it goes well, the cards will fall into place more, Suominen said about five and a half years ago.

– The starting point is that it improves the mood. The cause itself must be treated over time with medication and therapy.

According to Suominen, electrotherapy does not cause pain.

– It is done under short-term anesthesia, which they call a hangover. I put similar sensors, coils, on the forehead or temples.
