The US indie and electronic duo Tanlines has released their new song “Outer Banks” and has announced the LP THE BIG MESS along with it. The album is scheduled for release on May 19th. The re-release comes with a desktop music video in which singers Eric Emm and Jesse Cohen sit on a video call and a split-screen presentation shows the lyrics.

“The song is about what it’s like to be a perfectionist,” Emm explained in one press statement. “When I was younger I always thought it was a compliment to be called that. But I’ve noticed that it’s actually quite stressful. Especially when it comes to any collaboration. Concessions, compensation and just letting things go are all part of making the effort worthwhile in the end.”

The album was recorded in January 2022 with producer Patrick Ford at Emms Studio in Connecticut. According to Emm, THE BIG MESS is about “introspective masculinity”, about father-son relationships and what society expects of relationships between men. The album cover is a photo taken by Emm’s wife’s grandfather in Greece in 1952 and shows a man with a full gray beard, a brown coat and a walking stick. The tracklist for the LP has also been released.
