Tanja Heikka, 32, has been in a closed ward at Pitkäniemi Psychiatric Hospital ten times. The main reason is deep depression. At worst, Heikka has wanted to die and has tried to kill herself.
Presented as part of the Friday talk show Closed– the short documentary covers Heika’s unstable childhood. It started with symptoms especially after her mother’s death, although Heikka had her first panic attack when she was in elementary school. In an alcoholic family, he had to face abuse and abuse from his mother’s male friends.
Heikka received treatment seven years ago.
In addition to medicines, Heikka has tried electrotherapy. It has a sad echo of the old, but Heika’s experience is the opposite.
– Electrotherapy is not terrible. The goal of treatment is to eliminate depression. It was tried for the first time, and it was certainly the one that helped, Heikka believes Anni Tolonen in guidance.
– Before, it was hit directly in the temples. Nowadays, it is done under light anesthesia. Sensors are put on the head, and the person convulses. It measures how the electricity has responded, Heikka describes.
The closed ward is a refuge for Heika. It is not an insane asylum or a mental hospital, as Heikka herself points out in the documentary, but a psychiatric hospital where mental illnesses caused by brain chemistry are treated, among other things. Unlike in the movies, Heikka doesn’t squat in a straitjacket in the corner of the room, swinging herself from side to side. He receives intensive help in a closed ward, which he feels he benefits from.
– I dare to go deeper into my own depression and my own thoughts more easily when I know I’m safe. I can’t get anywhere and I can’t hurt myself. I dare to be with my own illness and thoughts, thanks Heikka.
