Tamara Hermans (40) was told last week that she will not be given priority in her search for a new home: her urgent request was not honored. This was a big problem for her, because she and her children have to leave her current home in August. After a divorce, she lives permanently in a bungalow park in Heiloo, but this park is making way for a residential area.

This week the municipality called Tamara with the news that she does receive priority for a home. In a response to NH Nieuws, the municipality of Heiloo explains it as follows: the negative advice of the Regional Urgency Committee does stand. But because of her ‘exceptional situation’, it was decided, against the advice, to grant Tamara urgency.
Media attention?
A super happy Tamara can hardly believe the good news. “I asked three times if it was real.” She doesn’t quite understand how it all happened. “Maybe it’s because there has been media attention,” Tamara thinks. “But I also just meet all the conditions.”
How does an urgency request work?
The assessment of the application is based on the criteria from the municipal Housing Ordinance. An application is provided with a pre-advice by an employee of the municipality. The application is then submitted to the Regional Urgency Committee for advice. In this way, all applications in the region are assessed in the same way. The Committee consists of people on behalf of the municipalities, housing associations and social institutions from the region.
In the case of Tamara, the municipality had advised in the pre-advice that Tamara be given urgency. But despite this advice, the Regional Urgency Committee decided not to give priority. An employee of the municipality told Tamara, but did so before the municipality had made a final decision.
Ultimately, the municipality decided this week not to follow the advice of the Urgency Committee, because they do not agree with it. “The municipality has the option not to follow advice; this is stated in the housing ordinance,” the municipality said.
