At the beginning of January, FC Bayern secured the services of offensive talent Paul Wanner on a long-term basis. But as it turns out, the midfielder could have landed at VfL Wolfsburg if things went a little differently. The 16-year-old may still do this for the new season, but in a different way.
Paul Wanner has already made history at FC Bayern, at the age of 16 years and 15 days he became the youngest Bundesliga player in the club’s history last season and the second youngest in the competition. But this record should not remain the last milestone that the attacking midfielder achieves in Germany’s top division.
The talent still has a lot planned, only extended until 2027 at the beginning of January after three notable appearances in the then badly weakened professional team of coach Julian Nagelsmann.
However, it currently seems quite possible that Wanner will not take the next steps towards becoming a regular player in the Bundesliga in Munich, but will rather hire from the competition.
As “Bild” found out, the left foot would like more playing time and can well imagine developing further on loan at another club. This is where VfL Wolfsburg could (again) come into play.
VfL Wolfsburg instead of FC Bayern: Wanner faced a change
According to the report, he was about to convince Wanner to change at the end of 2021, just a short time before the extension at FC Bayern. Accordingly, the 16-year-old was already there in person at the Autostadt to take a look at the arena, the training grounds and the VfL center.
Even in the talks about a contract, they were very far along, both sides could basically imagine an obligation, an agreement was not far away. But then came the meteoric rise of the record champions.
That’s why a loan for at least one season is now under discussion. The wolves might be right there, because both sides know each other very well.
However, there is currently no space available for the highly talented offensive man in Wolfsburg. Whether he would get the required playing time in coach Niko Kovac’s team is anyone’s guess.
