Taiwan goes to the electoral booth amid great interest from the US and China

The Taiwanese will go to the electoral booth on Saturday to elect a new president. Although the country has only 23.5 million inhabitants, the election will attract a lot of international attention – not least from the United States and China – because of the country’s disputed political status. The results will also help determine how the difficult relationship between Beijing and Washington evolves and whether tensions in the region will increase further or whether there will be a de-escalation.
