Tadej Pogacar would have liked to give up yellow: ‘We took that decision too late’ | Tour de France

Yellow jersey wearer Tadej Pogacar would not have minded if he had lost the leader’s jersey in the tenth stage of the Tour de France. The Slovenian of UAE Team Emirates, however, was 11 seconds off his lead at the line in Megève over the German Lennard Kämna, who had crossed the finish line almost 9 minutes earlier from the early break. “But I’m also happy that I’m still in yellow.”

,,It wouldn’t have been bad if Kämna had taken the jersey. We thought about giving up yellow, but I think we made that decision a little too late,” said Pogacar. ,,If Kämna got a few seconds ahead of me in the standings, that wouldn’t have been a problem, but we thought it would be a help to the team.”

Pogacar expects Wednesday and Thursday’s stages to be more important stages than Tuesday’s. The Slovenian says he is confident, even though he lost teammate George Bennett before the start on Tuesday, who was unable to leave due to a positive corona test.

,,That is not nice. It really sucks, honestly,” said Pogacar. ,,We lose two big bikes, with George and Vegard Stake Laengen. They were both at high risk because they had never had Covid-19. I feel very sorry for them. And she too, I think. I hope we survive the next days. We will keep fighting until the finish.”
