Tackling speed on Zeeweg is too slow, Ed: ‘Labrador policy’

The Friends of Middenduin are very surprised and very disappointed about the postponement of measures to make the Zeeweg in Bloemendaal safer. At the end of last year, the province decided to wait before lowering the maximum speed, for example. At the meeting of the Provincial Council this evening, the nature conservation organization is trying to encourage the province again.

Ed Prins has again written indignantly on behalf of the Friends of the Middenduin Foundation. He will make his protest heard again at the meeting tonight. According to him, one should drive more slowly on the winding road through the dunes for safety reasons. An additional advantage is that less nitrogen emissions end up in the National Park.

Now you can drive 80 kilometers per hour on the hilly and winding road through the dunes. In some places, as much as 60 kilometers are recommended.

Many accidents

But traffic to and from the beach often continues to drive too fast, partly because there are hardly any checks. The province recognizes that there is relative many accidents take place on the Zeeweg, with or without collisions with a crossing deer. Especially with Things often go wrong around gentle bends.

For a moment, the province seemed to control the speed over the entire route still want to reduce. The many ideas submitted by citizens after a call for this seemed to be decisive. Ed Prins of the Friends of Middenduin Foundation told NH at the time how he hoped for a quick approach to the Zeeweg.

Accessibility to the coast

The province does not want to think about a lower maximum speed until major maintenance takes place on the Zeeweg in 2028. Until then, a study into the accessibility of the coast can be completed.

“It has been a problem for so long. And now they want to conduct another study into the accessibility of the coast.” Ed Prins cannot believe that safety is something that is neglected. “In addition, the municipalities have already conducted accessibility studies.”

He does not think that the police do not have enough capacity to enforce this is a good counterargument. “Maybe a large number of people will already adhere to it. You also have to encourage it a bit.”

“Throw in some pepper”

Ed Prins, Friends of Middenduin Foundation

“I miss the ambition at the province. It is a nonsense policy,” Prins continues. “Throw some pepper in it.” The Friends of Middenduin feel supported by the municipality of Bloemendaal, which will also have its say in the Provincial Council committee meeting tonight.
