Table tennis: Düsseldorf defends championship title with Boll comeback

The table tennis men from Düsseldorf managed the title hat-trick: on Sunday they won the third championship in a row against Saarbrücken. Timo Boll was back at the table for the first time after an injury break.

Borussia Düsseldorf defended the German championship title in table tennis when Timo Boll made his comeback. In the TTBL final on Sunday (July 9th, 2023), Borussia won the home game in Düsseldorf against 1. FC Saarbrücken TT 3-1. In the new edition of last year’s final, Düsseldorf managed to defend the title.

Boll loses on comeback

The team around Boll, Anton Källberg and Dang Qiu decided the final in the four singles and before the final scheduled doubles. Of all people, Boll, who was not able to play at the European Games due to a shoulder injury, lost his singles game. Against Takuya Jin, EM record champion Boll had to admit defeat 1:3 (6:11, 11:8, 9:11, 9:11).

In the end, the 42-year-old was able to celebrate his 13th championship title after a forced break of more than four months.

Källberg turns 0:2 against Franziska

Anton Källberg and Dang Qiu made the victory for Düsseldorf perfect. Källberg defeated Patrick Franziska 3:2 and Darko Jorgic 3:0, Qiu defeated Jorgic 3:1. The opening duel between Källberg and Franziska was very exciting: Franziska was already leading 2:0 after two 11:7 sets, but the Swede Källberg turned the game around with 11:9, 11:6 and a gripping 12:10 in the fifth set .

33rd German championship for Dusseldorf

For Düsseldorf it is the third German title in a row and the 33rd overall. Boll is the sole record holder with 13 national titles. In addition, the exceptional table tennis player has so far celebrated eight Champions League and ten cup victories.
