Sydney McLaughlin sets a new world record in the 400m hurdles

Sydney McLaughlin has set a new best time over her parade route. The American broke her own world record.

Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin has set the mood for the World Athletics Championships with her next world record. The 22-year-old won the 400 m hurdles in 51.41 seconds at the US Trials on the World Championship track in Eugene on Saturday, undercutting her own record by five hundredths: last year she had Olympic gold in 51.46 seconds Won Tokyo and also improved her own world record in the process.

McLaughlin wants to break record at Worlds again

Britton Wilson (53.08) and Shamier Little (53.92) finished second and third on Saturday with a clear deficit. Like McLaughlin, they also bought the ticket for the World Championships, which will also take place in Eugene, Oregon from July 15th. Defending champion Dalilah Muhammad is then included via wildcard.

“It’s a good indicator of where we are,” McLaughlin said. She now wants to go home, work on some things – and then improve the record again.

Because McLaughlin finally wants to win individual gold at a World Championships for the first time in Eugene’s Hayward Field. In 2019 in Doha she won the title in the 4 x 400 m relay, but McLaughlin had to admit defeat to Muhammad in the 400 m hurdles in second place. In the Olympic race in Tokyo, she then relegated her compatriot to second place.
