Switzerland-Spain in Nations League: previous history and odds

A success in 23 challenges for the Swiss against the Red Furies. In the last five challenges, however, there has been balance

Switzerland and Spain meet 11 months after the quarter-finals at Euro 2020, with the success of the Red Furies on penalties after the 1-1 in regulation time, with goals from Jordi Alba and Shaqiri. Result that allowed Luis Enrique’s national team to play the semifinal against Italy, for Switzerland the European dream was interrupted but the real satisfactions came a few months later, with the qualification for the World Cup won precisely to the detriment of our national team. The context in which the two teams face off is very different from July 2021: both have started badly in the Nations League group and need points to not remain detached from the others, with Portugal and the Czech Republic both at 4.

The results

Rounding out the table is Switzerland, who lost the first two games – both played away – of Group B: 2-1 against the Czech Republic and 4-0 against Portugal. Also considering the friendlies, Murat Yakin’s national team has never won in the last four games played: the last success we remember well, because it came against Bulgaria on the last day of the qualifying round in Qatar 2022, while the Italy was stopped on the field of Northern Ireland. Spain drew the first two games of the group: 1-1 at home against Portugal and 2-2 at the Czech Republic.

Previous

In the new millennium, Spain and Switzerland have faced each other five times: great balance, with one victory for each side and three draws (the latest is that of Euro 2020, which then led the Red Furies to go through). Also in 2020/21 the two nations faced each other in the Nations League group: 1-0 for Spain at home (goal by Mikel Oyarzabal) and 1-1 in the return leg. Curiosity: Switzerland’s victory in the group stage of the 2010 World Cup (1-0 with a goal by Gelson Fernandez at the start of the second half) is the only success of the Swiss against Spain in 23 direct matches, also considering the friendly matches.
