Switzerland is sticking with controversial national coach Murat Yakin for the 2024 European Championship

Disappointing qualifying results

Murat Yakin is controversial as Switzerland’s national coach. The association has now made it clear: the Basel native should lead the Swiss at the 2024 European Championships despite the recent disappointing results in qualification. “Even though we drew four times and lost once in the last qualifying games, Murat Yakin has our full trust,” said President Dominique Blanc in an association statement on Tuesday.

Ex-professional Yakin, who played abroad at VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Kaiserslautern as well as at Fenerbahce – in Switzerland at Grasshoppers and at FC Basel – has been responsible for the Swiss selection since summer 2021. At the World Cup in Qatar last winter, the team reached the round of 16, where it ended after a 6-1 defeat against Portugal. His contract runs until next summer. Association boss Blanc emphasized: “He has our support in all areas.”
