Bern/Chicago (AP) – The Swiss soccer professional Xherdan Shaqiri is leaving Olympique Lyon and is now continuing his career in the North American Major League Soccer with the Chicago Fire.
The American club announced the transfer of the 30-year-old in a Twitter video. Shaqiri, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC (2013/2019), is to receive a three-year contract in the USA.
According to media reports, Chicago is to pay Lyon $8 million to buy the Swiss national player out of his contract, which runs until the summer of 2024. He couldn’t assert himself in Peter Bosz’s team. His new club should be well known in this country, since football world champion Bastian Schweinsteiger ended his career there in 2019. In addition to Munich and Liverpool, Shaqiri also played for Inter Milan and Stoke City.
