Swiss mountain may no longer be depicted on chocolate bar Toblerone | Cooking & Eating

The recognizable packaging of a Toblerone chocolate bar will soon look different. The Swiss mountain Matterhorn may no longer be depicted on it, Swiss media report.

The well-known triangular chocolate bars from Toblerone must comply with Swiss legislation. Owner Mondelez therefore changes the design of the packaging.

Swiss rules state that national symbols – such as the Matterhorn – may not be used on product packaging if they do not meet certain criteria. For example, food with Swiss symbols must be made for at least 80 percent with raw materials from the country, for milk and dairy products that is even 100 percent. Essential production must also take place in the country itself.

Mondelez will move part of production to a factory in Slovakia from July. Which means that the company is no longer allowed to use the Matterhorn. Earlier it was announced that the caption ‘of Switzerland’ will disappear. It will say ‘established in Switzerland’ instead.

The drawn Matterhorn will be replaced by an image of a mountain. A spokesman for Mondelez speaks of a “more modern and streamlined mountain”.
