Jong AZ has finally managed to win again in the first division. After twelve matches in a row without a win, VVV-Venlo was outplayed at times tonight at the training complex in Wijdewormer: 2-0.
Young AZ showed an excellent appearance from the first minute. The 1-0 halftime score was not an accurate reflection of the balance of power. Only Myron van Brederode managed to score for the Alkmaarders. He came in from the left and hit the far corner after fifteen minutes of play.
Missed penalty kick
The team of trainer Maarten Martens then got plenty of opportunities to double the lead. Fedde de Jong, who previously missed a chance, was even allowed to score a penalty after Iman Griffith was knocked down on the corner of the sixteen. De Jong shot the ball over from eleven meters. Basic debutant Lewis Schouten hit the bar in the first act. Mexx Meerdink and Mischa Engel were also in the starting line-up for the first time.
Wrong made right
The VVV players probably received a thunderous speech at halftime, but that did not help. In the 54th minute, De Jong made up for his missed penalty by hitting the ball from the turn: 2-0. It turned out to be the signal for the Limburgers to look for the attack more. That also seemed to immediately lead to a goal, but Sven Braken missed for open goal thanks to great intervention by Sem Dirks.
