Swiping is the new calling (and that’s much more dangerous): 2 percent of the time we drive with mobile in hand

On a 45-minute drive – from, say, Ghent to Brussels – the average Belgian driver spends 1 minute on his mobile phone. This is apparent from an observation of nearly twenty thousand vehicles by the road safety institute Vias. We call less with the mobile phone to our ear than before, but we look at the screen much more often. “And that’s so much more dangerous.” Not every driver does it equally often: there are major differences between car drivers and truck drivers, and between Flemings and Walloons.
