Contemporary Greek Tragedy

Antigone is an exciting play about a young woman of a damned race. Her father married his own mother and had four children. After a Power struggle wants Antigone to bury her killed brother , but this is against the will of Creon, the new man on the throne. She ignores the prohibition on which Creon orders to bury her alive.

The performance exposes a world that is surprisingly similar to ours. Antigone is a contemporary musical performance. Is that possible? Yes, of course. Greek tragedies have not lost any of their eloquence. Antigone could have been written today. Horrifying and exciting for young and old.

Meppel – Schouwburg Ogterop, Wed 20.15 pm, 16.75 euros incl. drink

Godfather of Afrobeat

The music of Femi Kuti is the beating heart of modern Afrobeat. With a style consisting of a mix of traditional Nigerian drum patterns, American soul, funk and R&B Kuti follows in the footsteps of his father Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. The ancient Kuti inspired people with lyrics brimming with political statements and penetrating beats. It is therefore not surprising that the artist’s son succeeds his father.

Femi Kuti’s political messages reach generations of musicians worldwide who, like him, fight for justice and freedom through music. Kuti’s band Positive Force continues to renew themselves, adding hints of punk and hip-hop to their sound while keeping its traditional roots and political message.

150 years of Dohle: peddlers on their way to a new future

This year marks 150 years since itinerant peddlers Max and Maria Dohle started their department stores. Dohle had everything for sale, from cutlery to crockery and everything for the household, but many a child will also have loved the range of toys on offer.

The latest exhibition of the Regional Historical Center shows why the Dohles settled from Germany in the Groningen peat colonies. What did their future in the Veenkoloniën look like? What items did they sell? Even after 150 years, there are still two Dohle stores in the Netherlands: Marleen Dohle’s store in Musselkanaal and Miriam Dohle in Scheveningen.

Stadskanaal – Regional Historic Center, until March 3rd Tue – Fri, 3.50 euros
