The Olympic third Sarah Wellbrock confidently secured the title over 1500 m freestyle at the German swimming championships as part of the “Finals” in Berlin.
The Magdeburg native, who is concentrating on her law studies and therefore decided not to take part in the World Championships in Budapest, won in 16:29.25 minutes and was quite satisfied.
“I’m not in the form I was in Tokyo because I’m preparing for my state exam and had to cut back on training a bit,” Wellbrock explained. The exams begin at the end of August, and from autumn the wife of Olympic champion Florian Wellbrock wants to start training again with the goal of Paris 2024.
Angelina Köhler, who had been eliminated in the semifinals of the 100 m butterfly at the World Championships, flew in directly from Budapest. In her victory in Berlin, the 21-year-old from Hanover swam a good half a second faster in 57.91 seconds.
