Magdeburg and Frankfurt cheers at the start of the swimming competitions in Berlin: Isabel Gose and Lukas Märtens won for the SCM. The Frankfurt team triumphed in the freestyle relays.
The swimming competitions at the 2023 finals began with two gold medals each for Isabel Gose and Lukas Märtens from Magdeburg. The two European champions Gose and Märtens initially celebrated gold for SC Magdeburg in the 4x 200 meter mixed relay. Later, Gose swam over 1,500 meters freestyle (15:56.80 minutes) and Märtens over 200 meters backstroke (1:58.26 minutes) to the title.
Premiere title for Gose and Märtens
These were premiere titles for both Gose and Märtens. Both usually specialize in shorter routes. “It’s a great competition to try out a few different routes.”said freestyle specialist Märtens, who still competes in the DM over 100 m backstroke, after his triumph: “It went quite well.”
Märtens WINS with girlfriend and sister
Curious: Märtens was in the mixed competition not only with his girlfriend Gose but also with his sister Leonie Märtens in the water. Leonie Märtens also swam to her second medal on Thursday: she finished second behind Gose in the 1,500 meter freestyle.
South African le Clos also wins twice
Incidentally, Chad le Clos also celebrated two victories. With SG Frankfurt, the 31-year-old won the 4×200 meter freestyle together with Aaron Wilmes, Danny Schmidt and Tobias Düll. The South African swimming star also triumphed in the 100 meter butterfly – the 2012 Olympic champion beat Marius Kusch (Essen/52.30 seconds) in 52.11 seconds. Le Clos is allowed to take part in the German championships because he starts for Frankfurt.
