Swimming pools a degree colder due to rising gas prices: “Seems like 5 degrees”

At all municipal swimming pools in the city, the water has recently become a degree colder. With this, the municipality wants to use less gas from a social point of view, now that prices are rising sharply.

Due to the increased tensions between Russia and the West, gas prices have risen sharply in recent times. As a result, the gas price for consumers is currently 3 times higher than a year ago. But it will not only become more expensive for normal households, the municipality will also have to pay more. That is why they are already taking precautions for the future by lowering the temperature of all their swimming pools.

Getting used to

The temperature has also been adjusted at the indoor and outdoor pool of De Mirandabad in the Rivierenbuurt. According to interim manager Marco van der Horst, the difference is noticeable: “For the visitors it takes some getting used to. A degree lower. But of course we do it from a social point of view. Because of the gas price that is rising enormously at the moment.” According to Van der Horst, this reduction is preventive: “In order to secure the future and not that we will be confronted with huge price increases at the end, both on the gas and on the ticket, we are now lowering the temperature as a precaution.”

“You feel like a king afterwards, so good”

Swimmer

Most swimmers who swim in the outdoor pool of the Mirandabad feel the temperature difference but are not bothered by it much: “I would almost say a stroke of luck, it’s even more delicious. You feel like a king afterwards, so good.” There is, however, a single cold spot between the swimmers: “Cold! It does feel 5 degrees less.”

Shower

According to the municipality, further measures can be taken to keep costs low. “We could also lower the shower water and reduce the shower time,” explains pool manager Van der Horst. “Those are the options, but that’s not an issue at the moment.”
