Swimming pool Wervik closes, there will be no new ones

Wervik’s current swimming pool is loss-making and costs the city a lot of money, says the college of aldermen. It is now quite outdated and there is concrete rot. But a new swimming pool would be an expensive investment, financially irresponsible for a city like Wervik. The visitor numbers for a classic swimming pool have been declining sharply for some time: people prefer to go to recreational pools.

The council of aldermen therefore announced a rapid closure: the doors will remain closed on 1 January 2023. A dozen people work there. The city is looking for a solution for them or guiding them to another job. For schools, school swimming will end after this school year. Wervik negotiates with Komen and Menen’s neighbors to move there.
