The national team for the World Swimming Championships scheduled for July in Fukuoka is born. In Riccione, in the first session of the finals, 6 Azzurri win the pass for Japan: 3 women and 3 men. Simona Quadarella, Sara Franceschi and Lisa Angiolini; Leonardo Deplano, Alberto Razzetti and Marco De Tullio.

Well done Simona

Simona Quadarella is the first Italian to qualify for the World Championships in July in Fukuoka: in the 800m she swims in 8’21″14 (improving her fourth seasonal world time trial in Florence in 8’22″73), well under 8’26 ”71 of the requested chrono. In the first part, the Roman from Aniene trained by Minotti passes in 2’02″55 and 4’08″80 and suffers only from the loneliness in the lane given the wide margin, then passes to 600 in 6’15″81 and closes with a widely awaited success and a time trial from which it starts in a summer key. And the training partner of the Roman Olympic and world bronze medalist, Marco De Tullio, 22 years old from Bari, takes the world pass in the 400m freestyle with the second time trial of the year in 3’44″69, thanks to a second part in progression in which overtakes Matteo Ciampi and Matteo Lamberti. Under the podium another De Tullio, Luca, who also precedes Gabri Detti.

Lisa Angiolini also takes the World Championships in the 100 breaststroke: in the last few strokes she gets the better of Martina Carraro and Arianna Castiglioni (divided by a penny) and will fly to Fukuoka in 1’06”18. On the other hand, the 1’06″37 is not enough for Carraro to seize the second pass and close the race: this means that the possibility remains open as well for the world champion of Budapest, Benny Pilato, who will only swim the 50m breaststroke here as she is not at best, to be able to try a last-minute qualifying in July, always in comparison with Carraro and Castiglioni. An eternal three-way playoff: paradoxically if no one were to have better times, Mrs. Scozzoli would have priority. The happiest is Lisa Angiolini, European silver in Rome in 2022, who has a personal best of 1’06”00. Also in the 200m-butterfly the three-man challenge is resolved with a single pass, taken by force with the touch by Alberto Razzetti, in 1’54″98: Stefano Franceschi’s pupil progressively mocks Federico Burdisso and Giacomo Carini who had alternated in head in the previous tanks. The Genoese is qualified, there will still be a chance for second place in the world championship. The time limit was 1’55”78.

Ceccon and master

Between one final and another, the winner of the Alberto Castagnetti award, or coach of the year, is proclaimed: with 58% of the votes of the jury, Alberto Burlina (Ceccon’s coach) wins the trophy over Fabrizio Antonelli and Marco Pedoja. Shortly before, Thomas Ceccon hits the first victory of the Spring championships valid as world trials for the Azzurri: in Riccione the world champion wins in 24″93, but that’s not enough for the 50m backstroke time limit of 24″70. The world record holder of the 100m beats Michele Lamberti by 2 cents, Simone Stefanì third in 25”16. Ceccon has an Italian record of 24”40.

What will be

In the 400m medley he gained the fifth world pass of the day: still prepared in Livorno, with Sara Franceschi, world silver in Melbourne, who in the 400m medley swims in 4’35″98 (third time of the year behind the Canadian McIntosh and the American Grimes, taking over from Katie Ledecky). The Tuscan coached by her father makes consistent progress from 4’37”06 and becomes the third Italian ever behind Filippi (Italian record 4’34”34) and Cusinato (4’35”98). It is breaststroke that Sara digs the difference and goes in progression.

Florentine sprint

Deplano hits the sixth blue pass in the 50m freestyle: the required time was 21″96 and the Florentine nicknamed Deltaplano swims in 21″89, eighth time trial of 2023: Palchetti’s pupil gets the better of Alessandro Miressi (22″12) and on the returning Lorenzo Zazzeri, Olympic finalist with whom he trains.
