Swimming ban in Dikkebus pond due to blue-green algae
In the recreational pond of the Dikkebusvijver, the Flemish Environment Agency observed a bloom of potentially toxic cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae.
Health risks
Because the floating layer is located in the recreation zone and carries serious health risks, the Agency for Care and Health recommends banning long-distance swimming, surfing, diving and water skiing. Other activities (boating, rowing, sailing, pedalo, wake-boarding, tubing, boat fishing and kayaking) are also discouraged by Care and Health.
The mayor therefore imposes the following prohibitions and precautions:
- All water recreation is prohibited
- Water recreation with more limited direct contact (boating, rowing, pedalo, boat fishing, kayaking) are discouraged, but not prohibited
- Fishing remains allowed
- Dog owners are not allowed to let their dogs swim
