Sweet Dreams no longer has a chance of winning an Oscar. The film by director and screenwriter Ena Sendijarević, starring Renée Soutendijk, was the Dutch entry in the International Feature Film category, but was not included in the shortlist published on Thursday. Also the EO documentary Neighbor Abdi by Dutch director Douwe Dijkstra did not make the shortlist. The shortlists contain all films that have a chance of being nominated for the prestigious film awards.
Now Sweet Dreams and Neighbor Abdi did not make the list, no Dutch productions have a chance of winning an Oscar this year.
The Academy, the organization behind the film awards, published the shortlists for ten different categories on Thursday: Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.
Barbie
Barbie by Greta Gerwig appears most often on the shortlists with five entries, three of which are in the shortlist of the Music (Original Song) category. Both Dance The Night from Dua Lipa, I’m Just Ken by Ryan Gosling and What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish have a chance of an Oscar nomination in that category. The film Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan is mentioned a total of three times, in the categories Music (Original Score), Sound and Makeup and Hairstyling.
In the Music (Original Score) category things are not alone Barbie and Oppenheimer along, but also the films, among other things The Color Purple, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Killers of the Flower Moon.
Character
The last time a Dutch film made it to the shortlists was in 2014 Lucia de B. made the list of International Feature Film. The last actual nomination was in 2003 for The Twins. The last win was for the film Character in 1997.
The actual nominations for the Oscars will be announced on January 23. The Academy Awards will be presented on March 10.
