Swedish players show support for Ukraine in football

Emma Berglund and Hedvid Lindahl consider the gesture small but important.

The Swedish women’s national football team intends to show its support for Ukraine, which is the target of Russian hostilities.

The Swedish team plans to bring the Ukrainian flag to the field and show a sheet with a message written before the World Cup qualifiers against Ireland.

In addition, a tifo supporting Ukraine is planned for Gamla Ullev’s auditorium.

– It goes without saying that we will do that, and I don’t think anyone has anything against it. When horrors happen, that is the least we can do, a defender of the Swedish national team Emma Berglund says the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Acts

Sweden and Ireland will face off in a match starting at 6.30pm.

National team goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl would like to do even more.

– Honestly, it would be better to go there and save the child, tell him to “jump in the car”. Concretely, it would feel like he had done something. We can still make this gesture together, Lindahl says.

The war in Ukraine has affected many. Several people want to help the Ukrainians who have suffered horrors.

“Hit the heart”

According to Lindahl, for example, his contract matters are irrelevant right now. His contract with Atlético Madrid is about to expire.

– Things like that seem small now, of course. I saw a picture of a child who could have even been my son. It hit the heart right.

For Sweden, which has not won in the qualifiers, one point is enough to secure a place in the World Cup in 2023.

Finland is playing in the same block as Sweden and is third in the fight for second place. Sweden won Finland 2–1 in the first encounter. The second game will be played in Finland in September. Finland will meet today at the Georgian Bolt Arena in Helsinki at 6.15 pm.
