Abba is too young for the Swedish cultural canon – at least the government says.

The Swedish government has one canon Detected by cultural assets that stand for Sweden’s culture – and ABBA is not there. The list puts artists: inside, works of art and products that have a decisive impact on Sweden’s culture. This can be found, for example, the Nobel Prize, children’s book hero Pippi Longstocking and the Ikea furniture company, but not the internationally known pop band.

The canon of a right coalition written

The creation of such a list was part of the election program of the right -wing government coalition. However, some Swedish institutions and minority groups, including the Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize for Literature, have been too narrow and criticized the initiative. The “Spiegel” reports.

Abba is “too young” for the canon

The reason for the omission of Abbas is probably the age regulation. All works in the canon must be at least 50 years old. Since the “most sustainable contributions” of the pop group to Swedish culture were created after 1975, ABBA did not make it to the list, the government’s official document says.

Abba’s reaction to the canon is not known.
