Ice ball star Tuomas Määtä returned to the Russian club SKA-Neftjanik for the coming season. The club announced it on its website on Wednesday.

Swedish SVT says that the supporters of the Swedish club Edsbyns IF had collected a large amount of money for Määtä’s possible return. Määtta represented Edsbyns in 2016–2020.

SVT also says that according to the Bandyplus website, Edsbyns’ partner was ready to cover all the expenses for Määtä’s return and the contract.

While playing in Sweden, Määtt won the national championship three times and the Swedish Cup once. He was also once chosen as player of the year in Sweden.

However, Määttä chose Russia and SKA-Neftjaniki, where he has been playing since 2020. Määttä has won the Russian Super Cup with the club, among other things.

Määtta is one of the best ice ball players in the world. He has won four World Cup medals in the Finnish national team.

Chairman of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association Antti Parviainen told Iltalehte on Wednesday that Määtä’s national team career is in danger.

– It has been discussed with Tuomaks and made clear to him that the federation will probably make a decision that he cannot represent Finland in the national team as long as he represents the Russian club.

– According to his own words, he accepts that solution, Parviainen continued.
