“Sweden wants to apply for NATO membership” | Abroad

Sweden has always been neutral, but since the Russian attack on Ukraine, more and more votes have been raised to join NATO. The Social Democratic Party has always been against it, but has now decided to join the alliance, according to the newspaper.

The opposition had asked Prime Minister Andersson last month to join NATO, but at the time she thought that would threaten security in Europe.

The minority government in Stockholm has already sent weapons to Ukraine, including 5,000 anti-tank weapons, helmets, equipment and field rations. Sweden thereby broke with the policy not to send weapons to countries that are involved in war.

The last time Sweden did this was in 1939, when the Soviet Union invaded Finland. Also in Finland, which borders on Russia, a discussion is going on about NATO membership. Russia has warned both countries, which are usually represented at NATO meetings, not to join NATO.
