Sweden steps closer to NATO membership: parliament already votes for accession | Abroad

Sweden cannot become a member of NATO until all 30 current member states have ratified the accession protocols. So far, 28 Member States have already done so, but Hungary and Turkey have not yet done so. Ankara in particular holds back the Swedes. Turkey accuses Stockholm of being too passive towards the Kurdish “terrorists” residing in Sweden. To defuse the conflict, Sweden recently proposed a draft of stricter terrorism laws.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said in Stockholm on Wednesday that he was convinced that Sweden could join the alliance by the next NATO summit in Vilnius in July, despite the Turkish blockade.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland jointly applied for NATO membership in May 2022. They want to join together, but it seems that Finland will join first. After all, Turkey has already announced that it will ratify Finland’s accession. Hungary will also vote on this in March.
