Debuting captain Elise Tamaëla has added Suzan Lamens to the selection for the Billie Jean King Cup meeting with Spain, Friday and Saturday in Den Bosch. The 22-year-old tennis star was already with the group to gain experience.
Lamens made his debut last week in Bogota on the WTA Tour, and won her first round match. As a result, she has climbed to place 182 in the world ranking, while she was not in the first 400 last year. The reigning Dutch champion trained well on the indoor clay court in Den Bosch for the first two days and has now been promoted to team member.
The Netherlands and Spain are playing for a place in the lucrative final week of the country tournament. Spain has to do without top ten players Paula Badosa and Garbine Muguruza, who are injured. It makes the team of Elise Tamaëla, who succeeded Paul Haarhuis and makes his debut as captain, a lot more promising. Arantxa Rus is the team leader for the first time. Lesley Pattinama-Kerkhove, Arianne Hartono and doubles specialist Demi Schuurs have also been selected. The draw will take place on Thursday.
