Sustainable label: how it works

Un good, healthy food that does not damage the environment and has been produced in compliance with workers’ rights: we will soon be able to know if what we put on our plates meets the best sustainability standards thanks to the new food labeling Positive Fooddeveloped in Italy by the Milan Center for Food Law and Policy with the University of Milan.

For the first time a label “tells” the food in a complete way to provide the consumer with all the information for an informed purchase.

Sustainable food is certified

The certification, which will be issued to companies on a voluntary basis, analyses four indices: the environmentevaluating the impact of production on soil, water and so on; people, to understand whether the conditions of those who worked on the product are fairand, safe and healthy; so that it is tracked and sustainable; nutrients, to enable a healthy choice (for example, in the case of dairy products, the contents of calcium, protein in relation to fat and salt are taken into account).

He comes out a score from zero to five for each parameter and a label which informs about the environmental, social, economic and health impact of foods; it will soon be validated in various food supply chains and as Pier Filippo Giuggioli, project manager for the Milan Center for Food Law and Policy, underlines, «The objective is to make consumers an active part in the ecological transition, for economic development that respects the environment and sustainability. Everyone’s well-being also depends on equity and the protection of the right to food.”
