Suspicious WZA nurse is not a familiar face in Veenhuizen

The nurse who is suspected of involvement in the death of several patients in the Wilhelmina Hospital Assen (WZA), lived relatively anonymously in Veenhuizen. Few people in the village seem to know him well.

Theodoor V., the WZA nurse who was arrested on Monday, has not been living in Veenhuizen for very long. He ended up there about three years ago. Neighbors report that the suspect is not a familiar face in the village. He would also have few contacts in Veenhuizen.

The nurse will remain detained for at least two weeks. The investigation by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) would concern 24 deaths in the WZA, but sources report that there could be more. All next of kin have been notified. The Public Prosecution Service does not yet want to say what exactly the charge is.

The relatives have engaged victim lawyer Sébas Diekstra. He says he has contacted the Public Prosecution Service with the urgent request to provide more clarity as soon as possible about the investigation findings and the suspicions against the nurse.

The suspicious deaths were at the time of the corona pandemic, in the corona department of the Asser hospital. The research covers the period between March 2020 and May 2022.
