Suspected ‘sword murder’ remains in jail
In Marke (Kortrijk), a 52-year-old woman was killed with a sword by her partner on Sunday evening. The victim’s 9-year-old foster daughter was also present in the home. She was injured, but was able to flee. The man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder of the girl. That arrest has now been confirmed.
The thirty-year-old is not present in court this morning. He is reportedly very emotional about what happened, but where the sword came from and why the fuses broke on Sunday remains unclear for the time being. Thomas Vandemeulebroucke, suspect’s lawyer: “We are not going to say anything about that today. It is true that the facts happened in a specific context. It is best not to say anything about that today. We have not opposed the further enforcement of pre-trial detention. It is true that today it is decided that he will be further detained for a month. The investigating judge has said that the investigation can continue, so we will wait for the investigation to continue.”
