The Samen Sterk in Brabant (SSIB) team has received several reports of poaching in West Brabant in recent months. During their investigation, the wildlife inspectors came across a gross form of poaching in which hares, rabbits and deer are brutally caught and killed by so-called long dogs.

Disrupt nature
These are dogs that chase, overtake and catch or kill a hare, rabbit or deer with their high speed. The use of these dogs is prohibited by law. This form of poaching has major harmful consequences for nature, because large areas are poached completely empty. Where hunters maintain the population, poachers completely disrupt nature.

Air gun
During the search, a heavy PCP air gun was seized, among other things. These can have the same effect as a firearm. According to the SSIB, this type of weapon can easily kill a wild boar, roe deer or red deer.

Samen Sterk in Brabant calls poaching ‘a serious environmental crime in which unauthorized means are used to obtain or kill animals in a gruesome manner’. The minimum sentence for poaching game with long dogs can be several years in prison.

The nature inspectors of Samen Sterk in Brabant (SSIB) were supported by the police during the arrest.
